Thanks to all who played in this month’s Turtle Island Imports Facebook contest. The question was, “How do you use your Turtle Island Imports Sarong?”
We had a lot of creative responses and fabulous picture submissions. The grand prize for best picture wins $25 gift certificate to turtleislandimports.com. The three most creative, interesting or funny answers to this question win any sarong we have in stock, up to a $15 value, including free shipping.
The first winner is LyzaJo, who wrote this poem. Congratulations, you have won a sarong!
Be lenient with lobsters, and kind to crabs,
And be not disrespectful to starfish or dabs;
Chase not the Cochin-China, chaff not the ox obese,
And babble not of feather-beds in the company of geese.
Be tender with the tadpole, and let the limpet thrive,
Be merciful to mussels, don’t skin your eels alive;
When talking to a turtle don’t mention calipee–
Be always kind to animals wherever you may be
Wear a sarong, and forever happy you and I will be
The second sarong prize goes to Jody, for her inspirational sarong fashion. She says, “I first started wearing your beautiful sarongs after my mastectomy. They helped me feel beautiful, camouflaged and comfortable…I still wear them on weekends when I just don’t feel in the mood to wear my prosthesis but still want to look pretty!” Thanks Jody!
Michael wears our sarongs on the job – he’s a Pirate! Arg, avast ye matey. Ye have plundered a free sarong!
The grand prize goes to our favorite picture submitted by Paul, who writes, “We dress up in our sarongs and go out for cocktails.” Looks like a great party, Paul! Congratulations, you have won a $25 shopping spree at turtleislandimports.com. Remember, we sell much more than just our popular sarongs. We have Indian tapestries, home decor, mukluks and hundreds of unique products!

Who knew? The film Eat Pray Love, opening this week in the US, is starting a Bali jewelry fashion frenzy! Our Bali Beaded Jewelry is gaining some much deserved attention – inspired by the beads that Julia Roberts wears in the film. We like these bead bracelets especially! Eat Pray Love Beads!

Well, it is that time of the year. Daylight is waning in the 8 o’clock hour, the college classes are filling up and the kids are feverishly trying to enjoy every last drop of summer. Fall is coming and thanks to the school calendar, it starts even earlier if you have anything to do with a school.
I thought I would show-case some of the items getting ordered in the back to school frenzy. Whether your kid is starting college this year or furnishing their first apartment, Turtle Island Imports has what they are looking for!
Dorm room decor! We have Indian Bedspreads that college kids hang on the ceilings, walls or use to create a false wall for a little privacy from the roommate. They also look cool on the bed and have the added benefit of keeping pizza crusts, pencil shavings and pet hamsters out of the sheets.
We just sold some of our sarongs to a woman who is making a bed-skirt for her daughter’s dorm room. It will hide the items being stored under the bed and bring a little beach energy to to her Midwestern dorm room. We’re hoping for pictures when it is made and will post them here if we get them.
Also cool are the Balinese wood items, especially the flying things. Flying kitties, flying frogs, flying angels and even flying mermaids and dragons. The flying bats are a big hit. Check out our dream catchers and painted mirrors and peg holders and too! All these things are light enough to hang with a pushpin or two, which is useful when the dorm police don’t allow nails and hooks.
Hacky sacks are selling like crazy right now. It has been demonstrated that kicking around a footbag can relieve the stress of college life in a healthy, social way. Our sand hacky sacks are the most popular ones.
We have a great selection of book bags, purses, wallets, backpacks and even a pencil case! One of the nice things about college life is ditching the 47 pound backpacks of high school. Students don’t have to lug text books to classes and lunches aren’t brown bagged. This frees up the hands and benefits the spine greatly! We sell our Guatemalan bags for carrying the bare essentials – water bottle, notebook, makeup, etc. We also have a hemp water bottle holder that even guys can carry around without feeling like they are holding someone’s purse. Our hemp courier bag is popular right now, too.
Our wool and leather mukluk slippers are a nice, snuggy way to keep feet warm in the dorm. Late nights studying call for more comfort than potato chips – mukluks are excellent, affordable and very in right now. They are increasingly popular with dancers too. If your kid dances ballet they will probably have already asked you for a pair, but they are hard to find. We’ve got ‘em!
Turtle Island Imports is owned by a Mom and Pop with a kid in their thirties, a kid in their twenties and one just coming into his last year of high school, so they are plenty experienced with sending kids off to college. Decorating the dorm or apartment is an important part of the rite of passage and can be a nice way for parents and their kids to share in the experience together. Show our website to your kid and let us know if you have any questions.
Happy Autumn and have an easy Back to School!

We have 25 gorgeous batik dresses from Bali up on our site. And now, with our new pictures, it is much easier to see how cute they are!
We know buying clothing online is tricky. You’re never quite sure if the colors, fit and overall look of your purchase will be as you want until you have tried it on. So, if you don’t love the dress (or top, skirt or pants) you purchase from us you may return it or exchange it for any reason!
Our Balinese dresses are 100% light, dreamy, breathable rayon. They can go in the washing machine on cold, and are great to travel with. You can dress them up for an evening party or dress down for bumming around. You’ll feel cool and look lovely!
Turtle Island Imports is a small, family-run business nestled in the forest of Northern California. If you are a retailer, contact us for wholesale opportunities. Thanks for your support!
